Meet Maya

While honing my skills on the North Shore this past winter, I discovered that there were only a few female surf photographers. Initially thinking this was a disadvantage, I am discovering it is more of a gift. The Hawaii photography scene, especially the Uncles, have been welcoming. They have a curiosity of what I am doing and will tell me stories and give me tips and tricks that they have learned over the years. I am still new to the industry but working to find my style and build upon my portfolio. Being one of few women in the industry, I am trying to have a strong connection with the women in the water, specifically those surfing in the Red Bull Magnitude Competition.

I am currently working independently as well as a lead photographer for a small swim suit company, Change Swim. I believe in all inclusive body image positive photo shoots, which works well with Change Swim, who have the same philosophy with the swim line. This promotes confidence in everyday girls to be comfortable in bikinis, and the possibility that anyone can be in front of the camera and be beautiful doing it.

Another skill set I am developing is underwater water photography. I take advantage of any opportunity to use my water housing and to continue to learn my photography craft in all marine settings.
